What is SMTP Server? and How It Works?

What is SMTP?

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

Simply it's a Network Protocol. I don't want to bother your head now, what is a Network Protocol and these technical stuffs. I just want to tell you that SMTP is that thing, is that software, is that set of commands that is used to send emails over the Internet. So, whenever you want to send an email you will be using the SMTP, very simple you can memorize this by just remembering this SMTP is: Send Mail to People so it's that thing that is used to send emails.

Now explaining the sending operation. let's say you want to send an email to someone in this planet you simply open an email client like Outlook like maybe your mobile phone, whatever you are using and you send an email, you send email to email address of that person “the target email” and you write your body with a subject and click on Send. What happens then?

This email client will send the email to an SMTP server so we have an SMTP server that is responsible for delivering our emails to people, this SMTP will receive this email client message and it will do some authentications. It will check the configurations and if this client can authenticate and use this server. After that, this SMTP will send the email to the target email server “person you want send to”.

So, let's say you are using Gmail, your Gmail account and you want to use to a Yahoo account the SMTP server of Gmail will receive your email then it will authenticate you and send your message to the target address, to the target email server at Yahoo then the message will be inside the Yahoo mail server until the user of that account opens his inbox and see that email or message using protocols like POP and IMAP and by the way I have explained what is IMAP and POP in another article you can check this article below. So, this is how the operation works, this is how SMTP server works.

So, whenever you want to send an email you need an SMTP server to do this job for you.

Now what you have to know also that SMTP works over the TCP network protocol.

What is TCP?

What you have to know about TCP, it's a connection-oriented protocol. What this means, it means that when you send an email, a session, a connection will open between your SMTP server and the mail target server in this way it will ensure the email delivery if the target email exists, if not simply, it will bounce back.

What's bouncing?

Is whenever you send an email that is not valid or does not exist the email will bounce back I have also an article here about bouncing, how to handle bouncing and everything else you can check that below.

That's What SMTP? and How it Works Simply.
